Oh.. these Russian authors and their books !!. I've read a great variety of books from almost every country in the world but never came across anything like these Russian classics. This's a heart warming story of a courageous mother and her effort to help her rebel son. A great description of the Russian working class of those days. This's unarguably, Gorky's best bookeven after finishing this book, I'm still in awe of the characters and the book. since this was my 3rd Gorky novel, I knew what was in store for us. but it amazes me how the magic of gorky's thoughts spellbinds us even after 100 years. pavel, Andrei, nilovna, nikolai, ludmilla, rybin and all the characters would live long in our hearts.
The story of a mother and her son, kindhearted one mother and her son who is a freedom fighter and a man who create one group from with their friends. The lead courage of them. Good story.

Honestly, I wasnt convinced at first; with so many reviews and wonderful comments, I felt the book wasnt upto the mark, but then slowly as the book went on I grew with the protagonist Nilovna, how her simple surviving nature embraced change, how her love for her son grew into love for fellow comrades and towards the entire revolution and how her soul burnt brightly at the end, lighting hundreds with her fire! Simple and impactful!

So much to say about this amazing novel! It was a great choice for our book club's theme, book from Russia. Gorky is a genius and I would love to read his other works.
I realise this was probably written for the average individual in mind, given the political nature of the novel (and the fact that Gorky was one of the main players behind the second Russian Revolution), but the simplicity of the prose did at times become tiresome for me in my reading of this.Rather one-dimensional characters, with a lack of character development, but given the time and the place this was written, I'm willing to look through this as well.Pretty much, documents the growing
