Representaion To Books xxxHolic, Vol. 10 (xxxHOLiC #10)

In which Watakanuki gives Kohane-chan a balloon, and we discover Himawari's secret.

This is one of my very favorite volumes, after the sad park bench ghost in Volume 6. When I started the series, I loved the art and the Japanese folk tales, distrusted the emphasis on fate as an explanation for coincidence, and was faintly annoyed by the excitable, pinch-faced lead. Watanuki has changed--stronger and wiser in his love for the people he loves, gentler with those who are weaker than he is--but my perception of him and of the loss and fear behind the prickly defensiveness has also changed. Everyone in XxxHolic wears masks, except Kohane, who is too young, and Yuuko, who is too powerful, and all the masks are hiding the same thing: fear of hurt and of giving hurt. Watanuki has learned he has more than pain to give, and gives it; and so do others here.

This is one of my favorite volumes in the series. There are reveals and there are emotions that bring a sweet/bittersweet taste to the relationships that Watanuki have formed. Watanuki has grown stronger, braver, and gentler around those who have impacted him...and many of those people care more than he realizes.

I am enjoying the development of all of the characters. Himiwari in particular was a pleasant surprise and the curse she is under. I also can't wait to see what comes out of both her and Domeki having to enter Yuko's shop. A really great installation in the series - probably one of my favorites so far

This is easily my most (?) favorite issue of the series. I even shed a few tears while reading this because it touched me where it counts :) I love the artwork, especially how Watanuki, the main male character, is drawn. In one panel he's made to look like a member of a boy band or an actor in a drama, and the next panel he's screeching like a banshee. The ladies behind this manga are extraordinary.

I'm not entirely sure if I'm on this volume or not. I've read quite a lot lately. Onemanga says I'm on chapter 158, so if anybody knows what volume that is, it would be nice to know. If chapter numbers aren't your thing, I'm just past the part where Kohane-chan's mother is found out. Help would be nice.

Another great volume. We finally, finally find out what's wrong with Himawari-chan. And she, Domeki and a certain mysterious character save Watanuki's life. That was quite awesome. For the first time in his life, Domeki had a wish that allowed him to enter Yuko-san shop. It's actually quite sad that it came down to that because he has always been the one and only character who had no need for Yuko-san's services. I'm also quite curious about the mysterious boy who paid for Watanuki's life.

Finally, they come right out and say it: Watanuki's obsession with Himawari is a bad thing. Apparently she is the cause of bad events to anyone who is close to her, including many of the things that have happenned to Watanuki. Yet he is determined to stay in love with her, as well as to fix whatever this problem is... It's not really possible to change this, but he does manage to give her a consequence-free companion in the shape of a magical bird, so there is some hope.

xxxHolic will continue to be my favorite of the CLAMP titles. I love this chapter because we see so much more with Himawari and Doumeki.
