This may be the best book in the series so far. It starts slowly with a gentle building of tension and then explodes into an intense, dramatic and violent ending. There is violence in many of the Commissario Brunetti mysteries, of course - many of the crimes being investigated are murder. The 10th of Donna Leons tales about Commissario Brunetti, the Venetian detective, worked somewhat less well for me than many others since it is set, not in his usual haunts (the canals and calli of Venice), but on an isolated island in the Venetian lagoon.
