An Irish immigrant girl is working for the Triangle Shirtwaist Company when the tragic fire occurs in 1911.Excellent description of the garment industry and the problems of immigrants at that time.✮ summer reading 5/? ✮The story was so short, I felt like I couldnt build a connection with any of the characters to actually feel their pain. At the same time, the story was choppy because Auch tried to cram so much in so little. I did enjoy the photographs at the end and the list of names of the girls who died in the Triangle Shirtwaist fire
we read this book as a group for social studies i was very plesently supriesed with how much i liked it.
Suddenly fear gripped me. It was one thing to stand up on my hind legs and demand to stay here, but now it was really happening, and Ma was letting Maureen stay too.In Ashes of Roses by Mary Jane Auch, the Nolans leave Ireland for NYC but face hardships when Joseph was sent back after having an eye infection. The girls have to navigate the tough city life and find jobs and when Ma goes back, the two oldest girls stay and struggle to find food, shelter and jobs.This book is a very enjoyable book
I loved this book. Rose was a great example of a strong female character. I liked that this story focused on hardships rose and her sister faced. The characters in this book fit very well into the time period.
I would have liked to give this 3 1/2 stars, but unfortunately that is not possible on this site.The story moved quickly and was interesting. I just wish there had been more about the tragedy of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire and it's aftermath. If so, I would have given it even more stars. The cover of the book shows an old photograph of the factory, which, along with the title, led me to believe the story of the fire would be a greater part of the story. However, the main character,
